On 8 October, the government of Québec unveiled a comprehensive Biopharmaceutical Strategy, which acknowledges the research-based pharmaceutical industry’s strategic contribution to the province’s economy and the inherent value of innovative medicines – both in terms of health outcomes and wealth creation.
The Strategy is specifically designed to initiate a permanent high-level dialog between government and industry, to create a more competitive and attractive business environment in Québec, engage the federal government on issues of data protection and intellectual property rights, generate funding for promising biotech startups, increase the Industry’s capacity to attract foreign scientists and experts, and maximize the commercial potential of public biopharmaceutical research.
The IFPMA’s Acting Director General, Mr. Michael D. Boyd, deems this governmental initiative to be a strong example of how bold policy decisions can ensure that the research-based pharmaceutical industry can play a leading role in improving access to innovative medicines and health care systems across the world.
