food and drug interactionsThis is an example of Drug-Food interaction. Researchers proven that Grapefruit Juice interacts with calcium channel antagonist agent, felodipine. This was identified two decades ago. Since then, few hundreds of articles reporting the interactions between Grapefruit juice and prescription medications. Recently I came across an evidence based review article written by David J. Greenblatt, MD on pharmacy times website. Author has gone through 99 references and presented the article well organized and informative manner.  He also mention education objectives of the article, link to the article will be given at the bottom of the post, you can find them in the first few lines of the article but anyway I’m going give you the list below.

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the mechanisms by which grapefruit juice (GFJ) may produce pharmacokinetic interactions with certain prescription drugs.
  • Evaluate medications being taken by patients and discuss with their physicians which drugs, if any, may be of concern when taken with GFJ.
  • Consult with patients’ physicians in selecting drugs within a given class that may be safely taken with GFJ, with little or no risk of a drug interaction.
  • Caution patients and other health care professionals regarding sources of information that may be incomplete or inaccurate.
