Since 2011, drug market participants have had the opportunity to trade illegal drugs through online anonymous marketplaces dubbed cryptomarkets. Cryptomarkets offer a user-friendly infrastructure, similar to eBay, where market participants can meet and conduct business together. These well-designed anonymous platforms offer a professional setting for drug sales, but to what extent they are the future of drug dealing is unclear. This study characterizes the structure of the drug market hosted on cryptomarkets in order to better understand the economic setting of cryptomarket drug vendors. Market competition and the size and scope of drug vendor activities are analyzed. We find that the drug market hosted on cryptomarkets is fiercely competitive and deeply unequal. The size and scope of vendors' activities are limited. Challenges arise due to the online, anonymity and illegality features of cryptomarket drug transactions. The illegality status of drugs forces vendors' offline activities to stay within a small size and scope, limiting their potential growth online. The online nature of cryptomarkets fosters competition, but the risks that arise from anonymous transactions exacerbate buyers' tendency to choose well-reputed and experienced vendors. Thus, vendors face strong barriers to sales and 90% of them act as spectators in the market. This inequality is exacerbated by aggressive advertising conducted by established vendors to push out potential competitors. A paradox is found: the market is fiercely competitive, but also populated by market superstars, whom, however, still have limited size and scope. We conclude that cryptomarkets are not likely be the future of drug dealing because of the challenging environment they offer to cryptomarket drug vendors.

Developments in technology have not only transformed aspects of our daily life, but they have also impacted the way in how illicit transactions are organised, such as illicit drug supply and demand. This book focuses on illicit drug transactions through drug marketplaces on the dark web, also called cryptomarkets. The dark web is an encrypted, small part of the internet not searchable by regular search engines. These drug cryptomarkets offer an unprecedented opportunity to study a drug market and to monitor new trends in drug supply and demand. International research has provided some general insights into the profile, experiences and motivations of drug cryptomarket vendors and buyers. This research has however indicated that national differences exist regarding the different variables that relate to cryptomarket use and prevalence. Therefore, in 2019, the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) commissioned and financed CRYPTODRUG shedding a first, yet necessary, light on illicit drug trade on cryptomarkets from a Belgian perspective. From the alley to the web. Belgian involvement on drug cryptomarkets discusses these CRYPTODRUG results. The book does not only focus on the profile of Belgian vendors selling illicit drugs on drug cryptomarkets, but also provides a first insight into the experiences and motivations of Belgian cryptomarket buyers.

Abstract: With the creation of the Internet, there has been a rapid emergence of online drug markets. Illicit online marketplaces, or cryptomarkets, are used by vendors to sell goods without the threat of interactions with others and law enforcement detection efforts. These cryptomarkets guarantee buyers and sellers anonymity through the TOR network and digital currency to perform transactions. With a lack of state supervision in dark networks, however, buyers and sellers lack protection and must instead rely on social networks. Social network analysis has been used to study a variety of phenomena, such as gangs and covert networks; however, little research has been conducted to analyze these networks on the dark web. Thus, the purpose of this study is to add to the dearth of research available on the dark web, particularly the tobacco market. The current study examines the network of an online drug distribution network, Silk Road 3.1. Transactions between buyers and sellers from the cryptomarket were recreated to identify the most central vendors. Results demonstrate that vendors of tobacco-related products are few in comparison to their buyers, but are the most central. Future research should examine cryptomarkets over time, as well as purchasing patterns to track the demand of specific products and the prevalence of specific vendors.

"Cryptomarkets, or drug marketplaces found on the dark web, began in 2011, with the creation of Silk Road (Bilton, 2018; Ormsby, 2014). Since that time, cryptomarkets have proliferated, and as of 2018, they have been publicly associated with furthering the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States (Associated Press, 2018). However, despite this claim, a study that focused on the experiences of cryptomarket users who source their opioids from cryptomarkets did not exist, and cryptomarket literature that discussed opioid sourcing and opioid use from cryptomarkets remained scacre. The purpose of this study was to begin filling that literature gap, and to capture the experiences of opioid sourcing cryptomarket users. A constructivist grounded theory approach (Charmaz, 2014) was taken to explore the experiences of 15 opioid sourcing cryptomarket users from various parts of the United States through semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that participants use cryptomarkets to avoid street opioids containing fentanyl, are dissatisfied with healthcare options for treating substance use issues, struggle with physical and emotional maladies that encourage opioid use, and are constantly attempting to change stigma surrounding opioid use. Implications for healthcare workers in substance use settings, and for those policymakers and law enforcement entities who are regulating illegal opioid use within the United States, are discussed in the final chapter."--Page ix.
